JoJo Siwa surprised everyone when she became candid about her relationship, after coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community the previous month.
The 17-year-old dancer appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show on Wednesday, February 3, where JoJo revealed to Jimmy Fallon that she is currently in a long-distance relationship with “the most amazing, wonderful, perfect, most beautiful girlfriend in the whole world.” She made sure to keep her partner’s identity a secret.
JoJo explained how the TikTok video of her lip-syncing to the line “Now you’re one of us” from Paramore’s “Ain’t It Fun” came to be. She appeared in the video alongside members of the Pride House, a collective of LGBTQ+ TikTok creators, which brought several speculations that this could be JoJo’s way of coming out.
“They come over, and we’re doing this TikTok, and I was like, I think this TikTok that we’re doing to ‘Ain’t It Fun,’ I think this is going to out me.”
“And I was like, I don’t really mind because it is true, I do have the most amazing, wonderful, perfect, most beautiful girlfriend in the whole world. It’s not something I’m ashamed of, I just haven’t shown the Internet yet. And there’s always been speculations, of course, but I was like, I think this is gonna out me.”
As expected, fans were quick to catch the hint and tossed several questions about the meaning behind the video, so JoJo decided to have a bit of fun before coming out publicly. After some days, she posted a TikTok of her dancing to Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way,’ and a picture of herself wearing a T-shirt that said, “Best Gay Cousin Ever.”
Before this, JoJo had been talking on the phone with her girlfriend, and they both decided she should post the T-shirt picture. In fact, even JoJo’s publicist wasn’t aware of all of this.
“We were both like, ‘Technically, I still haven’t confirmed it.’ And so I was like, ‘I kinda just want to post this picture on my Reels story,’ and she was super encouraging. She was like, ‘Do it!’ And I was like, ‘All right,’ and I did it.”
It was two days after posting the picture that JoJo was telling her girlfriend over the phone that it was starting to sink in how potentially risky this moment could have been for her career.
“I was like, ‘Well, technically, that was a really big risk that I took posting that. But if I lost everything I created because of being myself and because of loving who I want to love, I don’t want it. That’s not what I want if I can’t love who I want to love. That’s one of the most important things to me.”
JoJo then revealed that she was crying tears of joy only 10 minutes before appearing on The Tonight Show.
“I’m just so happy because now I get to share what makes me the happiest with the world, and it makes my heart so happy.”
