Gabrielle Union on Choosing to Forgive Dwyane Wade when he Welcomed a Baby with Another Woman

Gabrielle Union is candidly speaking out on several personal experiences of her life that she has never addressed before, in her new book, You Got Anything Stronger

One of those topics is her memory of the emotions she went through when finding out Dwyane Wade had welcomed a baby with another woman.

Gabrielle Union was more than “devastated” when hearing the news

Gabrielle and her husband of seven years, Dwyane Wade have been in the spotlight for their relationship for quite some time. And while they look very much like an unbreakable couple, there have been moments where their relationship wasn’t cupcakes and rainbows.

It was before the two got married in August 2014 when Dwyane, 39, fathered a child with another woman when they were on a break. The retired NBA player welcomed his son, Xavier (age 7), with Basketball Wives star Aja Metoyer, in 2013. He proposed to Gabrielle later that year.

Although Gabrielle has discussed this time of their relationship before, she took on a more personal sharing of what she was going through during that time in her book, You Got Anything Stronger (the book was published on September 14, 2021).

When Dwyane told Gabrielle that Aja was pregnant with his baby, she stated that they were “in a much better place” in their relationship. But, the situation still hurt her.

“To say I was devastated is to pick a work on a low shelf for convenience,” Gabrielle worded in her book. “I have not had words, and even after untold amounts of therapy I am not sure I have them now. But truth matters.”

Gabrielle, 48, then explained that she and Dwyane were actually trying for a baby at the time. But it wasn’t easy for the couple.

When Gabrielle was struggling to get pregnant, she recalled Dwyane told her, “As much as we want this baby, I want you...We’ve lost too much in our relationship for me to be okay with encouraging you to do one more thing to your body and your soul.”

“The experience of Dwyane having a baby so easily—while I was unable to—left my soul not just broken into pieces, but shattered into fine dust scattering in the wind. We gathered what we could to slowly remake me into something new. There was no way to disguise where I’d been glued back together.”

The L.A.’s Finest star recalled thinking, “This woman is such a failure. And she has the nerve to be old. And she has the nerve to have a younger husband. And she has the nerve to stick with a guy who had a kid with somebody else.”

Gabrielle wrote that her thinking had been “if I didn’t submit to a surrogacy, then I was convinced I needed to let Dwyane go.” “Even if he didn’t want to, I had to let him find someone who could give him what he wanted. But I loved him.”

She then wrote, “Each day, he had worked to be forgiven, and I had chosen to love him and forgive him. And part of this journey of making peace with our love is also making peace with ourselves.”

Gabrielle and Dwyane welcomed Kaavia James (age 2) via surrogacy in 2018.

In addition to Kaavia and Xavier, Dwyane is also a father to Zaya (age 14) and Zaire (age 19), and his nephew Dahveon Morris (age 20), who the athlete adopted in 2011.

“I can never know if my failure to carry a child put a ceiling on the love my husband has for me. Yes, I am Baby Mama number three, a label that is supposed to be an insult. If I am telling the fullness of our stories, of our three lives together, I must tell the truths I live with. I have learned that you can be honest and loving at the same time.”
