Clay Aiken, a former "American Idol" contestant, announced his candidacy for Congress in North Carolina on Monday, making it his second effort to represent the state where he grew up. Clay announced the news on his Twitter account.
“Can you believe it’s been almost 20 years since I first got to share my voice with you?” he said on Twitter. “That’s a long time. A LOT has changed! We need powerful voices more than ever, so I’m running for Congress. And my voice is even stronger now! ;-) #JoinTheChorus”

He called himself a “loud and proud Democrat” on his new website, speaking on running in a newly drawn district that includes Durham and Chapel Hill.
Representative David E. Price announced his retirement in October.
“I intend to use my voice to deliver real results for North Carolina families, just like David Price has done for decades,” Clay Aiken wrote. “I’ll always stand up for my principles and fight for inclusion, income equality, free access to quality health care, and combating climate change.”
Clay is joining the Democratic primary field that has two state senators and a Durham County commissioner.
Previously, Clay ran for Congress in a Republican-leaning part of the state in 2014. During that time, he won the Democratic primary, later being defeated in the general election by the Republican incumbent.
